Working Holiday Maker Program
The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) Program allows young adults to have a 12-month holiday, during which they can undertake short-term work and study. The WHM program includes over 40 partner countries in two visa subclasses, the Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa and the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa. WHM visa holders can apply for a second and third WHM under certain conditions.
- Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) for French passport holders - Basic Eligibility: must be 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries, including France); must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction; must not be accompanied by dependent children. Other countries eligible to the WHM-417 (Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) – Eligibility – Hold this passport).
- Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) – Basic Eligibility: must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive); must have a passport from an eligible country; must not be accompanied by dependent children. Check the countries eligible to the WHM-462 (Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) – Eligibility – Hold this passport).

Before travelling to Australia, check the travel advice of your country of citizenship-nationality for recommendations made by your country to its citizens travelling overseas.
Canadian nationals should check the Canadian travel advice for Australia at Travel advice and advisories for Australia and follow Canadian recommendations.
French nationals should seek up-to-date information and assistance from their representations in Australia (French Embassy in Canberra or the French Consulate-General in Sydney) and should also check all French recommendations including on Working-Holiday visas below:

Contacting the Australian Department of Home Affairs (visas-immigration-citizenship)
Home Affairs does not have an office at the Australian Consulate-General in Noumea. The Australian Consulate-General in Noumea will not respond to Home Affairs enquiries and will not escalate these to Home Affairs.
If you require further information or assistance, please speak to the Home Affairs multilingual Global Services Centre (GSC) directly. The Home Affairs multilingual GSC is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm (except Australian national public holidays):
- The Home Affairs multilingual GSC can be contacted directly on +61 2 6196 0196 (outside Australia) or on 131 881 (in Australia). Alternatively, from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm (except local public holidays), callers from New Caledonia or Wallis-and-Futuna can call +687 27 24 14 and press option 2 to be transferred to the Home Affairs multilingual GSC.
- the Home Affairs phone options are provided in English but if you prefer to speak with someone in your language, press 6 and say your language in English (for French-speakers, say “French”) and confirm “Yes” when prompted. If the operator speaks to you in English, keep saying your language in English to be put through to an interpreter.
